Theatres
As you would expect from the home of the world's largest international arts festival, Edinburgh has many theatres in and around the city. This is a brief introduction to the most popular venues.
Edinburgh Festival Theatre In June 1994 the Edinburgh Festival Theatre was extended to create the largest theatrical stage in Britain. The auditorium can hold audiences of more than 1900 people. With its full frontal glass façade the theatre is a visual attraction in its own right.
Edinburgh Playhouse is a major venue, situated at the top of Leith Walk, that hosts many big-name and West End touring shows, be it dance, musical, rock, or acts from the Edinburgh International Festival.
The Royal Lyceum Theatre is where much of the full on productions of classic theatre - Shakespeare, Checkov et al – takes place. It also caters for more contemporary touring and commissioned productions and the family-orientated Christmas show is usually one of the most popular in town.
King's Theatre as well as playing host to major touring theatre productions, including performances by the Royal National Theatre, and touring musicals from London 's West End, the King's Theatre also hosts local amateur productions.
Traverse Theatre is a modern purpose built theatre which is publically funded. It is probably the major venue for contemporary Scottish theatre, and play an important role in the development of new theatre writing and education as well as being a key venue for the Edinburgh Festival. |
